Is it normal to have teeth removed for braces?

Tooth extraction – or removing teeth is sometimes necessary to achieve the best results when getting braces. Depending on the patient and treatment plan, your orthodontist will consider all options to achieve a healthy smile before recommending an extraction.

Why do I need my teeth removed for my braces?

Here are some of the following signs that may indicate a need for extraction, but it depends on the specifics of your case:

  • The tooth is too large to fit in the position

  • Tooth growing in the wrong direction

  • The tooth is sore or painful

  • The tooth is discoloured or exhibits signs of decay

  • The tooth is very sensitive to the touch

  • The tooth appears chipped, cracked, or damaged

  • The tooth is loose (adult tooth) due to decay or periodontal disease

  • Issues with biting or chewing

Your orthodontist will thoroughly examine your teeth, including comprehensive x-rays, to determine the placements of each tooth and what will need to be done to achieve a healthy bite and smile – including the possibility of extractions.
