Bad Breath and Braces

Do braces cause bad breath? The simple answer is no. Bad breath can affect anyone, even people without braces.

When you have braces, you’re at a slightly greater risk of having bad breath. The reason bad breath is more common for people with braces is because braces make it easier for tiny particles of food to get trapped underneath the brackets and wires.

Causes of Bad Breath

Halitosis, also known as bad breath can affect anyone. Fortunately, bad breath is preventable and treatable. The main cause of bad breath is bacteria in the mouth.

We consume different types of food and drinks every day. If the food isn’t removed, bacteria will feed on it and produce an unpleasant smell. Other reasons for bad breath include gum disease, cavities, certain foods and drinks like canned tuna, onions, or garlic, and smoking.

Sometimes bad breath can be caused by medical conditions such as salivary gland conditions, gastro-intestinal disease, respiratory tract infections, liver and kidney disease, or lung cancer.

Ignoring the issue or using breath sprays and chewing gum only hide the smell, they do nothing to treat the cause.

How to prevent bad breathe

Bad Breath and Braces

  • Brush twice a day: Get food particles out of your mouth by brushing regularly.
  • Floss daily: Flossing gets rid of plaque and food particles in between your teeth and at the gumline that your toothbrush can’t reach. Read our “How to floss with braces” guide.
  • Use Mouthwash: Not only does mouthwash get into the spaces between your teeth (especially after brushing and flossing), but it also kills germs and bacteria that remain in your mouth.
  • Replace your toothbrush: It's highly recommended that you replace your toothbrush once every three or four months.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking an adequate amount of water will prevent dry mouth by encouraging the flow of saliva. The water will also wash away bacteria and food debris.
  • Healthy Diet: Having a healthy diet and enjoying sugary treats in moderation will reduce your risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Don't Smoke: Not only does smoking stain your teeth, but smoking and vaping dry up the mouth tissues and reduce salivation. Saliva keeps your mouth clean and healthy, and when you don’t make enough, bacteria build up and cause bad breath.
