Post-Treatment After Care: Will my teeth move again?

Will my teeth move again after my brace treatment is one of the most common questions asked by our patients.

The simple answer is YES. Your teeth can move back after braces and yes teeth moving after braces are quite normal.

Why Teeth Move

Teeth Grinding

When you rub your teeth together or apply pressure to the molars on either side of your mouth, you are raising your chances of tooth movement.

Neglecting Retainers

Most of the time, teeth shifting after orthodontic treatment is a result of not wearing retainers. Orthodontists give their patients retainers after treatment to ensure their teeth stay in their new positions

How To Keep Your Teeth Straight

At the end of your treatment time, the lab will produce and supply you with a set of removable retainers to be worn for a prescribed amount of time every day to keep your teeth in place.

It takes time – at least 6-8 months – for the periodontal ligaments (gum fibres) to adapt to the new positions and hold the roots in these new positions. That’s why retainers are so important, as they act as ‘holders’, allowing the teeth to settle.
